Review from Percussive Notes (2021):

Two Plus Two

Scott A. Wyatt

“Two Plus Two” is a large-setup percussion duo with electronic playback (tape) written in 1975. The piece makes extensive use of graphic score elements in addition to complex standard notation. It is very much in the tradition of Stockhausen, Haubenstock-Ramati, and Boulez in the compositional style and score density. Scott A. Wyatt makes liberal use of mallets and implements notation, including bows, two different snare sticks, two bass drum mallets, cluster mallets, two types of timpani mallets, two types of cord mallets, brass mallets, and yarn mallets. This is a good opportunity to use combo mallets and sticks. Wyatt also makes use of very specific playing techniques (secco, vocalizing, timpani pedals, etc.).

The piece is tremendous and blends the electronic and acoustic sounds wonderfully. It requires players to be very familiar with the tape as well as each other’s parts. It is best that they perform using the score. This is well suited for a graduate or professional recital and is indicative of the music of its time.
