Review from Percussive Notes (2021):

Mosaic

Nicholas Hubbell

“Mosaic” is a great minimalist piece for two pitched instruments, lasting approximately six minutes. The piece consists of 31 measures or “cells” that get repeated eight times each. The instructions state that the “general dynamic is mezzo forte. As the piece progresses, subtle graduations of dynamics should be introduced to interweave between the lines.”

The piece itself is reminiscent of “Nagoya Marimbas” by Steve Reich. In fact, this would be the perfect piece for students who want to perform

“Nagoya” but aren’t there technically. There is not a requirement for instrumentation other than “two instruments.” Each part has six notated pitches in treble clef. This leaves some room for experimentation with color and timbre as well as an opportunity for collaboration with a non-percussionist.

Overall, “Mosaic” is an excellent piece that explores minimalism at its most basic level. While the piece is not complex it would be appropriate for any setting from high school to professional.
