Review from Percussive Notes:
Trifle at your own risk! “Bagatelles” is a well-crafted trio for flute, clarinet, and percussion. This chamber work challenges each performer as a multi-instrumentalist and requires not only dexterity, but deft ensemble skills. The first movement balances constant interplay between each of the instruments and contains enough interesting counterpoint to keep each performer clued into their ensemble role. While a bagatelle often refers to a brief and often light or humorous work, this intricate work only satisfies the prior at just over seven minutes. Due to its post-tonal harmonic language, any semblance of humor would share an irony with that of Walt Whitman.
All wit aside, this is an impactful multi-movement work for three serious performers who are willing to balance many different performer roles, including a brilliant second movement that oscillates between duets and an exciting “Hary Janos”-inspired finale. “Bagatelles” would be a great addition to a graduate chamber or professional recital and would surely be a unique display of artistry that can stand out on a recital program.
