Review from Percussive Notes:
Elliott Schwartz – Options I
While this eight-minute work primarily features the trombone, it offers a nice opportunity for a percussionist to interact with a wind player in a chamber setting, as well as to stretch his or her improvisational chops on non-pitched instruments. Written in 1971 and recently published, the piece requires the trombonist to cycle through a variety of performance techniques (with and without a mute, gliss up and down to undefined notes, and even play on the strings of an opened piano), while the percussionist interacts and responds to these moments by performing from a series of 10 “events” on the printed page. The percussion events consist of a mixture of notated rhythms, improvisatory gestures from graphic notation boxes, performing with fingers on instruments, and the incorporation of shouts and hums.
