Review from Percussive Notes:
Pauline Oliveros – Outline
“Outline” is a challenging work that will be great fun for any experienced contemporary player. The work will also be a good challenge for those interested in strengthening their improvisation skills. While most of the work is quite closely notated, Pauline Oliveros also leaves sections of various lengths for improvisation, sometimes guided and sometimes free. Though much of the music is sparse, the piece never feels empty; there is always a sense of life and action, as voices pass around the trio, alternating between speaking independently and simultaneously. All players read from the score—a necessity for the constant passing of ideas around the ensemble—and all players should have knowledge of extended techniques. The piece is humorous, fascinating, and adventurous— a wonderful addition to any contemporary performance.
