Review from Percussive Notes:
This unique, eclectic percussion sextet provides a minimalistic presentation of the homogeneous timbral sound of 24 woodblocks—divided equally among six performers. David Macbride’s compositional effort of 2018 presents challenges of focus, concentration, and careful observation of precise rhythmic and dynamic control.
All parts are equally challenging, and it will demand masterful musicianship of all six performers to present a satisfying performance of this 93-measure composition. It is suggested that each performer utilize as similar a pitch as possible of the top woodblock. A modified use of scoring and notation of quintuplets and septuplets will require unified interpretation agreement by all performers.
This is an unusual composition, and it would probably be most successful with graduate-level percussion performers. Although mallets are not prescribed, it would probably be necessary for all six performers to agree to use the same set of hard rubber mallets.
