bringing in the sheaves, for solo flute, includes one score.
Twelve sets of six variations merge. The themes are drawn mostly from prominent flute licks in the symphonic literature from Mendelssohn through Stravinsky. The non-flute licks could easily have been scored for flute as well. Each set of variations projects one pitch of the chromatic scale. The sets of variations are all progressively structured from least distorted to highly distorted. The piece breathes based on the ebb and flow of differing levels of contrast, from smooth to rough, from blatantly familiar to artfully disguised. bringing in the sheaves was commissioned by the flutist Jan Pompilo in 1975 and premiered by her in Paris in 1977. A recording by flutist John Fonville is available on the Einstein Records CD Gringo Blaster.
