Review from Percussive Notes (2021):

Transits I
Michael W. Ranta

Michael W. Ranta is known as an American percussionist, a student of Thomas Siwe and Harry Partch, and a composer of contemporary avant-garde music. This work certainly seems to fit into that genre. Completed in 1977, this is a composition for a large group including a soloist of indeterminate instrumentation, a small string section, guitar, and four percussionists with large multi-percussion setups.

Appropriate for a college or professional group, this piece can present quite the challenge to those looking for one. The package did not come with music for the soloist, leading one to assume that the solo part is completely improvised. The music changes meter and tempo constantly with many different textures throughout. The supporting parts seem to alternate, giving the soloist plenty of space to explore and providing complex backgrounds to mimic. The score and parts are copies of the hand-written originals, and all text is in German.
