Review from Percussive Notes:

Erik Lund – blessed

“Blessed” is a solo composition for double second steel pans composed in 2004 by Northern Illinois University composer Erik Lund. There are no accompanying performance notes other than the range needed (E3 to E-flat 6), and no recording was included. However, the piece is so well written that its immediate brilliant musicality jumps off the page, striking this reviewer with absolute engagement and enthusiasm. The piece is almost a mini rubato suite that features nine sections that go continuously from one to the other. Each “section” has descriptive headings and tempo indications that vary in mood and expressivity. Single-line chromatic melodies are featured throughout with little tremolos and double stops, as this piece does not rely on reference to traditional steel pan music. Rather, it is more akin to modern marimba literature in its matured use of mixed rhythms and expressive interpretations of the musical passages where there are few barlines and liberal expressive indications. This piece would be most suitable for percussionists with experience both on steel pans and modern keyboard percussion literature, as it is certain to highlight any recital or concert opportunity.
