Review from Percussive Notes:

Otto Henry – Do Not Pass Go

This piece, composed in 1971 but recently published, is a creative work for three pedal timpani, which are played by two performers who face each other on both sides of the drums. The drums are placed diagonally, or at right angles to the audience, and the pedals on two of the timpani face player one, and the pedal on the third drum faces player two. The piece is described as a ceremonial game, and the materials are presented in seven sections. The drumheads are divided in imaginary areas, and the players maneuver to the assigned areas to create different colors of sound, as well as different rhythmic motives. The performance notes state that the sequences should not be memorized, and the piece must not be over-rehearsed. One can see that the success of this type of writing is determined by both the creativity of writing and the performers.
