Review from Percussive Notes (2021):

Horinouchi
Michael Ranta

“Horinouchi,” for percussion ensemble, two guitars, and soloist, creates an intriguing, unique soundscape that can transform with every performance. While many aspects of the piece are defined (specific mallets, pedals, entrances, tempi fluctuations, number of players, etc.), many aspects are left to the performers, (some mallet/stick substitutions, soloist’s additional instruments/ implements, etc.). In this way, each performance could render a different result. The soloist uses a glass bowl, electronics of choice, and a metal bowl. This piece was written with a combination of graphic and traditional notation, which lends itself well to the specific/nonspecific aspects both contained within. While the composer has specified when he wants certain events to occur, and with what instruments for the ensemble, the soloist is left with much freedom of interpretation by presumably listening to, adjusting to, and reflecting the sounds of the ensemble with his/her/their chosen instruments.

“Horinouchi” is perfect for a large group of college or professional percussionists, especially if they are looking to broaden their approach to the “traditional” percussion ensemble. Included are a number of unique, beautiful instruments, mixed with perhaps more familiar ones. Likewise, the notation is a mixture of traditional Western notation and graphic notation. This blending of cultures and art(s) is an excellent study in the endless musical possibilities available through percussion.
