Jeffrey Kresky - Bell Music

“Bell Music” is an intense and exciting work that is appropriate for college or professional groups. The piece is characterized by its volatile relationship with calmness and space. Short, pointed, exclamatory figures, often separated by full measures of rest, begin and end the piece. Related bursts of energy are also found throughout the remainder of the seven-minute work, appearing as violent interruptions during otherwise calm passages.

This piece is a treasure trove of syncopation and complex rhythms; entrances on the second partials of quintuplets and septuplets are common, as are nested tuplets and elaborate examples of hocketting. Despite the rhythmic complexity, the piece retains clarity by employing a relatively sparse texture throughout, often with three or less voices playing simultaneously. Each part requires musical maturity, an extensive history of chamber music experience, and proficiency with four mallets. If your group is up for a challenge, consider playing “Bell Music.”
