Review from Percussive Arts Society:

Dirty Ferdie

Dean Drummond

This newly published composition for eight percussionists was originally composed in 1976 and revised in 1981 by Dean Drummond. Half of the battle in performing this composition is securing all of the diverse, unique percussion instruments and devising a suitable setup that will either permit the octet to function as an unconducted ensemble or as a conducted percussion octet.

This composition originally was composed for a percussion quartet, and in 1981, Drummond revised it for a percussion octet. The contemporary sounding work is quite complex texturally and would almost necessitate a conductor. The 29-page score is challenging to perform and not for the faint-of-heart (either performers or audience). This composition will require hours of intense rehearsal for a performance that is about 10–11 minutes in length. A considerable amount of program notes describe the unusual sounds that are collectively projected in this difficult percussion octet. —Jim Lambert, 2020
