Kristen Shiner McGuire – Colors of Earth and Sea

Kristen Shiner McGuire composed this advanced solo after a period of study with Keiko Abe, whose influence is quite clear. In two contrasting yet certainly related movements (“Earth” and “Sea”), McGuire creates constant motion in different ways. The first movement is driving, full of lines that fly up and down the keyboard, with nearly constant double vertical strokes throughout. Regular and mixed meters interact fluidly, quite reminiscent of Abe’s solo marimba works. The second movement contains mostly cho-rale textures, with rolled melodies traveling between the hands (including one-handed rolls) and across the keyboard. Ideas from the first movement return in bouncing melodic fragments that dance around the rolled lines. Both movements create a sense of undeniable motion and spirit—like the earth and sea. The piece is also available as a digital download from the publisher’s website.
