Study for Two Conga Drums

David Burge is likely more familiar to musicians for his works for piano, though he wrote for various media throughout his life. “Study for Two Conga Drums” was written during his second compositional period, when he was interested in contemporary music of the time (mid- 1960s). Perhaps unsurprisingly, the notation for this piece is “unusual” by today’s standards: a single 11 x 17 page, with a mixture of traditional and graphic notation to represent the desired individual sounds on each drum. The result is a specific, and artistic, rendition of the composer’s intentions for the conga drums.
“Study for Two Conga Drums” would make an excellent addition to any program, especially for a college or professional recital. While the notation might take some time to “decode,” once the performer acclimates to it, then it will yield a faithful performance to the composer’s vision for the unique timbres produced by the congas.
