For sixteen mixed clarinets, including score and parts. Pumpkin Tide explores extended techniques for the clarinet, is fun to play and is musically effective and affective. Written in 1971 when the composer was working with the well-known clarinet maestro, Harvey Hermann, developing clarinet ensembles, including the large group called the clarinet choir, Athey was inspired by the works of Stockhausen and Pendericki whose graphic scores produced special effects and, in addition were beautiful to look at. Pumpkins is light hearted in intent. The title comes from a Richard Brautigan poem, "Thousands of Pumpkins."
